I'm left with most important part of lay-out. So i'm having trouble with adding opacity background-color on top of my image during hover and also i don't understand how those box-shadows works

how can i make sure that hover works after click on button number because my program does show hover before clicking on any button number but does not work after clicking on one of numbers

How can i change image without using javascript when it comes to responsive design? I tried to use background-image and it wan't giving me desired result.
