Responsive 3-column preview card component without media queries

I used Heydon Pickering's Flexbox Albatross solution for making a responsive component without using media queries. Just out of curiosity are the any similar ingenious solutions for different problems, or do we basically have to wait for container queries to arrive?

One other question would be about spacing - is it generally acceptable to tweak the outer spacing for text and/or heading elements using line-height - since half of the line-box height for the first and last line does seem to contribute to visual spacing alongside paddings and margins (or gap in my solution), if there are no borders around text?
