Hi! To answer your questions - you'll encounter a various situations in real projects, and it may happen that you have to use fonts provided by designer. So I recommend you to practice using font files.
Also challenge bundles here often include variable fonts - that's a cool thing definitely worth to get familiar with =)
Oh, and I recommend you to use rem for font sizes cos it's a special relative values which depends on user's settings. By default - 1rem = 16px.
